Olympic competitions, not as tough as a job interview

Olympic competitions, not as tough as a job interview We are all out of steak knives people! Olympic Competition It isnt the candidate that is the  most qualified, but the one who is best prepared  for the interview that will walk away with the job offer. An Olympic competition is tough, but a job interview is more competitive.  I like this clip to drive the point home:      In the game of interviewing, there is no “second place”.  WE ARE ALL OUT OF STEAK KNIVES PEOPLE! Interviewing for a job isn’t a part-time  endeavor, it isn’t a game, and there is only ONE winner. This is not just a competition people, this of your self in a more competitive Olympic competition!  This isn’t a game of horseshoes or hand grenades where “close is good enough”.  There is no second place. There is only a first place loser. In the Olympics, you can still monetize and capitalize a Silver or Bronze medal. When it comes to job hunting there is only the Gold. The difference in performance between the Gold and the Bronze finisher can be minimal. The rewards differential can be huge. Referencing the first line, you can have the best skill set and be the most qualified for the job, but if you dont know how to interview, or are not prepared to interview, you arent going to get the job.  In this economy, the competition is stronger than ever. For this reason, you need to practice your interviewing skills like you are preparing for an Olympic competition. Know exactly what you want to get across and practice your answers  OUT LOUD  on family, relatives, and friends.  Practice with anyone that will listen and practice in front of a mirror.   Reciting your answers in your mind may sound good to you but it doesnt translate to speaking your answers out loud. I have talked to numerous people who tell me “I know what I want to say, I dont need to practice”. But when I ask them: • Tell me why I should hire you? • What makes you the most qualified for the job? • Tell me what you want to do in 5 years. 95% of the time, I hear half-ass answers to these most basic interview questions.  These are questions we KNOW WE WILL BE ASKED.  How you answer these questions set the tone for the rest of the interview.     Stutters, ums and random thoughts do not cut it.  I am sure candidates know how to answer these questions in their own mind, but they haven’t practiced them out loud and it shows. It is painful.  It is the equivalent of the Jamaican bobsled team. Olympic Competitions and job interviews compared Olympic competition: This competition happens only once every 4 years.  Olympians prepare long and hard for a single moment, a single performance.  There is no do-over. Interview: In this economy, interviews don’t happen on a regular basis. We need to turn chance meetings into interviews.  Be ready, fluid and treat preparation like you only have one opportunity every 4 years. Olympic competition:  Single elimination, no wildcard entries here Interview: Single elimination.  Dont articulate enough, you are out. Olympic competition: Performance is key. The athlete with the best, fastest, smoothest, or most fluid performance is the winner. Interview: The candidate with the most polished answers, the most articulate, and easily understood will usually get the job. They know how to emphasize their strengths, talk around their weaknesses, and demonstrate their accomplishments. Olympic competition: How you handle yourself not only on the playing field but off the playing field will affect the endorsements you receive. You can be a multiple medal winner, but if you screw it up off the field with your behavior you get nothing. Interview: It isn’t just how you handle yourself in the interview room. You are being watched as soon as you enter the parking lot (no loud music as you drive in), when you enter the front lobby (treat the receptionist with respect), when you are taken out to coffee or lunch (don’t order alcohol ever), and when they ask you to job shadow a company employee (consider this an interview even if you aren’t asked any questions). Olympic competition: Uniform should be clean and appropriate Interview: There may not be a written rule about company dress code, but there are enough written and unwritten rules around interviewing that it is a topic that should be taken seriously. What first impression do you want to make? Olympic competition: The difference between first and second place is minimal and can be measured in 1/100’s of a second. The difference in monetary reward from endorsements between a Gold, Silver, and Bronze medal can be huge. Interview: The difference in interview performance between the first and second place candidate can be very minimal. Sometimes it comes down to the mood of the hiring manager or literally the flip of a coin. The difference in the monetary reward between first and second place is everything.  You probably won’t even know where in the pack you finished.  Even if you do get the job, there is a compensation band.  You dont want to just get the position, you want an offer at the top of the band.  What determines this?  How polished your answers are during the interview. Olympic competition: You need stamina and discipline. There will be a sacrifice in the training, nutrition, time spent with friends and family. The focus is the name of the game. Olympians don’t quit. Interview: You need to keep trying regardless of how much emotional investment you may have a particular job you were declined. If you have gone to 3, 4 or 5 interviews for the same job, you need to keep the same enthusiasm up for the next interview. Don’t wonder about “why another interview?” Another interview means you are that much closer to the Gold. You made the cut! Keep your focus: Answer the same questions the 4th time you are asked with the same enthusiasm you did the first time. Your job hunt IS an Olympic competition and you don’t know how many people you are competing against. If people saw the number of candidates all lined up that they were interviewing with, most wouldn’t even try. The good thing is that very few of the entrants have practiced for this competition either. Practice your answers, articulate your accomplishments, and give examples. See you at the after party, HRNasty nasty: an unreal maneuver of incredible technique, something that is ridiculously good, tricky and manipulative but with a result that can’t help but be admired, a phrase used to describe someone who is good at something. “He has a nasty forkball. There is no quick fix or an easy way for an international graduate to get a job in the UK University of Manchester Careers Blog

There is no quick fix or an easy way for an international graduate to get a job in the UK I get asked on a regular basis how as an international student/graduate is the easiest way to find a job in the UK? The answer is there isnt an easy way to find a job in the UK as a UK graduate or an international graduate. The situation is not helped by the fact employers on most job posts indicate you must be eligible to work in the UK at the bottom of the job description. This can be very frustrating for international graduates as they have paid large sums of money to study in the UK with the hope of a career after. As it stands the visa regulations in the UK are very strict and are expected to be even more restricted in the coming months. But what can you do if there is no easy fix or search engine to help you. Here are a few pointers to help you as an international student/graduate looking for work in the UK or in fact anywhere. 1. Use job search engines like  www.prospects.ac.uk  , LinkedIn, University Careers Services vacancy database CareersLink http://www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/careerslink/,  www.indeed.co.uk  to help you find those graduate jobs and schemes.  From this job search you need to do two things. Firstly ensure that the employers you have listed are on the employer sponsor registerhttps://www.gov.uk/government/publications/register-of-licensed-sponsors-workers. Secondly start to compile a spreadsheet of organisations who are hiring graduates in your field. 2.  Once you have your list of employers start to search for alumni in those companies. You can do this through LinkedIn and the My Network tab on the tool bar. Hover over the My Network tab and a drop down menu will appear. Select the option Find Alumni and if your details on your profile are up to date your current University should appear. This tool is fantastic and allows you to find alumni via their location, company, expertise, what they studied and what the are good at. You can then start to find alumni in the organisations/sector you are interested in and that are possibly hiring.  But be careful never, ever connect with alum and ask for a job!!!  This is your opportunity to showcase your talent and connect with the  individual  to build a  professional  relationship that may in the future benefit you. 3. Attend employer events, workshops, skills sessions, fairs and networking opportunities. Ask for business cards so that you can get the company representatives name to connect with later via LinkedIn or to mention in a job application. Attending these events and getting an opportunity to showcase your commercial awareness to a potential recruiter can be key to getting that graduate job in the UK. 4. Keep up to date with your home market.  Everyone needs a plan B! Understand how important is international work experience at the start of your career? Would getting experience in your home country in your field of interest building your knowledge, skills, expertise and network benefit you more initially then in 4 or 5 years time look at developing an international career and utilising the global network you have built for yourself. Employers in your home country value your overseas education and experiences whether extracurricular or work focused when they are looking to hire. Having a year in another country post graduation although difficult to get how beneficial overall would it be? Understand your market and what employers are looking for.   Finally  I get asked all the time do international students get jobs and visa sponsorship in the UK after graduation?  The answer is yes  they do, but this is  critical  to understand, those students that succeed dont say they havent the time to apply for all these jobs or research these companies. They dont tell me they are too busy to attend employer events or that London is too far to travel for a networking event. They dont turn up to fairs unprepared and not know everything they need to know about the employers they are interested in, because if they did they wouldnt get jobs in the UK. Follow their lead, make time for researching jobs, build that resilience when companies turn you down, keep going and maybe you will get that job offer! Good luck! 7 Recruiting Secrets All Job Seekers Should Know

7 Recruiting Secrets All Job Seekers Should Know 7 Recruiting Secrets All Job Seekers Should Know As an occupation searcher, on the off chance that you knew all the enlisting privileged insights that existed before applying to a vocation, you would be more ready for prospective employee meetings. Sadly, while working with an enrollment specialist to find a new line of work, they may abstain from uncovering these selecting insider facts. Why? The fact of the matter is regularly difficult to accept and for the most part prompts showdown or discussion. There is a bounty of privileged insights to finding a new line of work, so this post centers around those enrolling insider facts that would open up your eyes to what you, the activity searcher, ought to consider before working with a selection representative to find a new line of work. 1. Your references tossed you under the transport A primary enlisting mystery you are never told is the point at which that expected amazing reference pivots and totally tosses you under the transport. In the event that you are working with an enrollment specialist to find a new line of work, and something appears to not be clicking, stop and ask the spotter: Did my references express any negative remarks. It is alright to let me know. I can deal with it. I simply need to know whether I should at present use them. Presently, on the off chance that you need to pose that inquiry, you knew from the start there was the chance your references may not be so pleasant in their portrayal of you. Enrolling mysteries like this are normally never spoken in light of the fact that you must be straightforward with yourself about who you need as a kind of perspective. 2. You undersell yourself and could request more cash One of the key to finding a new line of work is realizing how to arrange a pay. The typical stunt for arranging cash is to settle on what you will acknowledge and afterward request more. On the off chance that you are working with an enrollment specialist to find a new line of work, the selection representative can never disclose to you when you ought to request more cash. You need to realize your own reasonable worth. You likewise must be sufficiently valiant to examine pay rates, particularly in the event that you simply need the activity and dread compensation dealings will hurt your odds. I 3. The activity was at that point filled This one of the enlisting mysteries essentially in light of the fact that we live in a belligerent society, where the very demonstration of not talking with somebody can prompt legitimate difficulty. Commonly, just to experience the exertion of working with an enrollment specialist to find a new line of work, spotters abstain from telling you when the meeting is supportive of show. Strangely, this is time spent maintaining a strategic distance from encounter by causing a vocation searcher to accept the person gets an opportunity, sufficiently long to dismiss you calmly. As a vocation searcher, everything you can do is your best to simply be your best. Make spotters see the organization committed an error. They ought to have recruited you, first. 4. They are waiting for another person An enlisting mystery gained from a selection representative I got to know was that, as an occupation searcher, I was just being met on the grounds that the individual they truly needed was making them pause. In truth, I am happy I knew this small selecting mystery (simply because I set off for college with the enrollment specialist) since it instructed me I ought to consistently step up my game and show organizations that they will lament not recruiting me. 5. You have to jettison your online life action This is a significant enlisting mystery on the grounds that nobody needs to become involved with a discussion about free discourse. The United States has been a politically antagonistic nation for the most recent decade and conversations via web-based networking media gradually crawled into the work environment. In the event that your posts via web-based networking media portray you or in any event, something that doesn't coordinate the organization culture, it can cost you work. 6. I truly need to get you recruited in light of the fact that it makes me look great For what reason would something so sure be kept an enlisting mystery? After an ongoing meeting with a selection representative/companion of mine, I was informed that getting me and my significant other employments would make the scout look mind boggling. I asked why I just heard that bit of news from individuals I know well. It is an extraordinary thing to hear! Be that as it may, at that point, I understood that maxim something like this may develop bogus desires or the conviction that the enrollment specialist thinks progressively about his/her notoriety than the activity searchers. This implies, while working with a spotter to find a new line of work, he may place my resume before organizations he loves more than I do. 7. Your initial introduction turns everybody off The truth of this world is that we frequently trust our initial introductions to be everlasting. We infrequently stop and ask, Did I establish a terrible connection? Perhaps this data is never uncovered out of dread of a negative response by the activity searcher. In general, discovering you are establishing an awful connection relies upon somebody being straightforward with you, or through close to home revelation. These selecting insider facts would be incredible to know, yet until all activity searchers demonstrate they won't fight back in the wake of hearing the terrible news, they will remain enlisting privileged insights. Toward the day's end, you may very well be working with a terrible selection representative. Look at these signs you are working with a decent scout.

5 conspicuous signs that you're likely an obsessive worker 5 conspicuous signs that you're most likely an obsessive worker We love a good #boss. We take notes from them about how to expand efficiency (even on Fridays), pursue that promotion and arrange a well-earned pay raise. Be that as it may, there is a moment that an obsession with work goes from expertly sagacious to genuinely destructive. Despite the fact that workaholism is a word frequently tossed around carelessly, the genuine marvel can block relational connections, influence mental and physical wellbeing, and at last uncover a more profound inner trial.Psychotherapist for ParentingPod and Nobel Coaching and Tutoring Ana Jovanovic clarifies a portion of the markers of workaholism, why they show and, in particular, how to remediate the behavior.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders' magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!1. A compulsive worker feels uncomfortable and on edge when not workingDespite in many cases despising their occupations, obsessive workers find that the real demon stration of working gives them a feeling of solace, structure, and significance, which brings about sentiments of blame, anxiety, and vulnerability when not working, as per Jovanovic. Without a day by day rundown of undertakings to deal with, an obsessive worker may feel as though they are sitting around or living without a reason, she says. Despite the fact that they don't have a lot of it, obsessive workers infrequently permit themselves to appreciate free time.2. An obsessive worker consistently makes work the top priorityIs it the special seasons? Doesn't make a difference. Family supper this evening? Disregard it. It is safe to say that they are wiped out? What difference does it make? An obsessive worker places work above everything else, Jovanovic clarifies. For them, working may be hard, yet not working is significantly harder. She particularly focuses on that their wellbeing frequently tumbles to the wayside for the sake of work. Furthermore, this slanted viewpoint on needs can at last influence their assessments of others. They cheapen individual needs and consider less individuals who put individual needs before work, Jovanovic says. Besides, compulsive workers are less inclined to invest energy interfacing with others by any stretch of the imagination - inside the working environment and out.3. A compulsive worker leaves next to zero time for different parts of lifeFree time isn't too free for obsessive workers. They continually make themselves available to collaborators and are all set right back to work if important. As per Jovanovic, numerous obsessive workers really lead in a way that guarantees they be continually required. Compulsive workers don't put resources into helping their group be flexible while they are gone, Jovanovic states. They make frameworks in which they are required - they micromanage, delegate inadequately, and don't depend on their colleagues. And with all their off time deliberately loaded up with office goings-on, they ar e then incapable to save time for family, companions, interests or themselves.4. An obsessive worker doesn't possess the problemAs with most addicts, most real compulsive workers won't profess to be compulsive workers, rather they occupy the fault to conditions, for example, requiring an advancement, lethargic colleagues, or normally having an excessive amount to do. The purpose behind this dependence on work, Jovanovic affirms, is a really dim one. Working extended periods is a socially affirmed method of smothering other intense issues throughout everyday life, Jovanovic says. This is the reason the hardest advance of everything is admitting to yourself that work is your interruption from living.5. A compulsive worker isn't happyPeople who are energetic about their work and channel a great deal of vitality into what they do are not obsessive workers. The purpose behind this, Jovanovic says, is on the grounds that obsessive workers are despondent. They feel an impulsive need to wor k unnecessarily, Jovanovic says. They don't focus on it for entertainment only, however to sedate the negative feelings that originate from not working. So with an end goal to evade the tension that originates from not working, they occupied themselves in work - yet to the point of numbness.Although workaholism can be all-devouring, Jovanovic guarantees us there are a few different ways to address the undesirable conduct.
